NEWMET Production Process of WPC Composite Decking and Other WPC Products

Dec 11, 2024

NEWMET Wood-Plastic Composite (WPC) has emerged as a popular alternative to traditional materials in various applications, including outdoor decking and other construction products. This article aims to provide an overview of the production process involved in manufacturing WPC composite decking and other related products.

1. Raw Material Preparation:

- Wood Fiber/Flour: Selected wood fibers or flour derived from sustainable sources are chosen as the primary reinforcement material.

- Thermoplastic Resins: High-density polyethylene (HDPE), polypropylene (PP), or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) are commonly used as the binding matrix.

- Additives: Various additives, such as coupling agents, stabilizers, colorants, and UV inhibitors, are incorporated to enhance the mechanical properties and durability of the final product.

2. Mixing and Blending:

- The wood fibers and thermoplastic resins are combined in a high-speed mixer.

- Additives are introduced into the mixture to achieve desired characteristics.

- The mixture is blended under controlled conditions to ensure uniform distribution of the components.

3. Extrusion:

- The blended composite material is fed into an extruder, where it is heated and melted.

- The molten material is forced through a die to obtain the desired shape and dimensions.

- Cooling methods, such as water or air, are applied to solidify the extruded profile.

4. Co-extrusion (Optional):

- In some cases, WPC products undergo co-extrusion, where a protective outer layer is applied for enhanced performance and aesthetics.

- The outer layer, often made of a different formulation or color, is simultaneously extruded along with the core material.

5. Shaping and Finishing:

- The extruded profiles are cut into specific lengths using saws or other cutting equipment.

- Surface treatments, such as brushing or embossing, can be applied to create desired textures and patterns.

- Additional finishing processes, such as sanding and buffing, may be performed to refine the surface quality.

6. Quality Control and Testing:

- Samples are regularly taken from the production line to ensure compliance with specified standards and quality requirements.

- Mechanical testing, dimensional checks, and other performance evaluations are conducted to verify the product's durability, strength, and resistance to environmental factors.

The production process for WPC composite decking and other plastic-wood products involves the careful selection of raw materials, precise blending, extrusion, and finishing stages. This manufacturing approach allows for the creation of durable, low-maintenance, and aesthetically pleasing outdoor products. As the demand for sustainable and eco-friendly materials continues to grow, WPC composite products offer a compelling solution for enhancing outdoor living spaces while minimizing environmental impact.
